King's Choice Games

Description

King’s Choice is a fantasy game that’s all about resource management, persistence, and long-term growth. Guide your kingdom to an era of prosperity and fill up your castle with powerful knights, romantic partners, and more!

King’s Choice is a fantasy-themed game that’s about managing resources, leveling up characters, and controlling a city. In the game, you play the role of a powerful ruler in a medieval fantasy kingdom. A dangerous coup attempts to oust your family from the throne. Through your choices, management, and dedication, you’ll have the opportunity to fight against the coup and increase your control over the kingdom.

King’s Choice combines elements from games of many different genres. In a lot of ways, it feels like a bunch of games that have been cobbled together. The story features beautifully drawn 2D characters with moving animations and a suspenseful tale of power and conflict. The management game feels like a classic mobile-app resource management sim, with daily tasks, slowly replenishing resources, and upgrades that will take days to save for and complete. Both of these segments are well polished, with sounds, art assets, and UI elements that feel very high budget.

The combat sections of King’s Choice do not share this same level of polish. Throughout the game, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to send out your knights to do battle with your enemies. When this happens, you’re treated to something that looks like a cross between a 1997 Age of Empires game and a 2002 Flash game. Soldiers run out and do battle, but they’re depicted as low-resolution sprites and animated terribly. This isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker, but it does feel out of place with the rest of the game.

King’s Choice has a couple of choices every once in a while, but it’s very much a modern resource-management mobile game. This means that your “choices” are generally determined by whatever resource you’re low on at the moment, not what you think is best for the kingdom. The game is less about strategic planning than it is about accumulating the stuff you need to level knights, love interests, and lords. It’s fun if you’re into that sort of thing, but it will take a long time.

There is a LOT of customization in King’s Choice, from your lover’s gender to your outfit and avatar. The game does a good job of letting you feel like your knights and lords are your friends, giving them custom voice lines and high-quality bits of artwork to complement their in-game statistics.

While King’s Choice has the same sort of freemium monetization as other resource-management mobile games, it’s surprisingly generous with its initial offerings. Greg, one of the first characters you meet, can carry you through most of the game without too much trouble. This means that while King’s Choice has stiff competition from games like Evony and Game of Sultans, it’s worth checking out and playing it for a few days to see how it compares. Should you decide you like it, you’ll be able to get fairly far without spending a lot of money.

While some games hide the best progression path, King’s Choice puts your best options front and center. If you’re a new player, the main quests almost always offer the quickest and easiest ways to raise the power level of your account. These quests will guide you through the process of upgrading your kingdom and increasing your leadership level. They’ll also ensure that you unlock game modes and progression systems early, allowing you to reap repeating rewards almost immediately. Since many systems have rewards locked behind periodic timers, the faster you unlock these systems the faster you’ll advance.

As you’d expect from a resource-management game, King’s Choice will occasionally have plateaus where it’s difficult to make obvious progress. When this happens, there are two things you should try. First, quickly skim through all of the options you’ve unlocked and make sure you’re taking advantage of everything. If you’ve been neglecting part of the game for a while, now is a good time to level up that system and get everything on an even keel. If that doesn’t work or you’re not interested in the parts of the game you’re not playing, log off for a day or so! King’s Choice’s periodic rewards and quests mean that there are sharp diminishing returns on your time investment. Simply doing basic dailies and then logging off for a week will give you a huge amount of resources and will help you progress through your current plateau.
